Asian Night Market

I went to an event today at the Bomb Factory in Deep Ellum. It was a very cool event.

First of all, Asian. It makes my inner weeaboo so happy. To me, it’s as close as I can get to an alien culture. It seems familiar in so many ways, but then there’s a twist. I don’t actually want to be Asian, but I enjoy being able to experience something different from my norm.

Then night. A night market is interesting because it’s not the usual daytime event. I am a night person, though I have become more of a sunlight person in recent years. There is something romantic to me about night events. Romantic in the literary sense, not in the relationship sense I’m afraid. I’m not terribly sentimental so romantic activities don’t tend to have the desired effect with me.

So there were about 20 food booths set up. We – that is, my daughter and I – tried a little bit of everything. We tried steak skewers, pork sandwiches, boba tea, a noodle bowl, and a thing called Tofu-Fighters which of course was made with tofu. We also tried something made with jackfruit, which I never had before. It wasn’t bad, but I preferred the tofu. We had a thing called a SnowBaby that was creamy and icy and pumpkin pie flavored. Daughter got a cocktail called cucumber lemonade. I asked her what kind of alcohol was in it but she didn’t know. What is always interesting to me, is how strong a flavor cucumber is. You would think cucumber would be so mild as to be invisible but instead it is the strong note.

I would have liked to see some vendors selling souvenirs and craft items. Maybe that’s just me, wanting shopping at everything.

The highlight was the lion dancers. There’s 2 men to a lion and the heads are huge. They have manes and glowing eyes that blink. There were 6 lions all together: black and red, white and red, white and blue, white and green, and 2 purple ones. The men do acrobatics in the costume so it looks like the lion is standing up or leaping. The blinking eyes were so cute! The dancers came down off the stage and played with the audience, eventually dancing all the way around the room, with confetti cannons going off every few minutes. It was very fun.

Always a good day when I can try something new.

I’m Ba-ack

Hello again!

I’ve been gone for quite a while with work.  I got back home about a week ago.  I’ve already seen many friends and my daughter; been to a brunch, a birthday party and a vineyard; and I’m all set up with unemployment.  Tomorrow of course is the new year so everything is closed, but Wednesday I will start contacting temporary agencies.  I like working for FEMA and I want to be able to continue with them but I do need to work during the down times as well.  Temp jobs are perfect because I can call out if I want to, like for trips and such.

What I have not done, is laundry.  And of course I am generating more of it as I continue wearing clothes.  I need to get on top of that.

Tonight is New Year’s Eve.  I am spending it at home with my roommates, and we have plans to eat ice cream at midnight.  It will be the last ice cream for a while, though, since we have decided to go keto.  No sugar so no ice cream.  Actually I think I am more paleo but they want keto so here we go.  We’ll see what happens.  Dinner tonight was a hunk of ground beef.  L called it a hamburger but it was just a chunk of meat, nothing like egg or bread crumbs mixed into it.  I don’t know if I can eat like that all the time.  I have some cooked shrimp in the fridge though that I’m looking forward to.

My daily living activities have definitely slowed down since I’ve been home.  I took a shower tonight because my hair was dirty and my skin was itchy, whereas on deployment I took a shower every other day.  I’m not a daily shower person, it dries out my skin.  But I recognize the signs of depression settling in and I need to make a plan to fight it.

I’m glad to see my cats again.  I’m going to try to add a picture of my Charli.  She was laying next to me, sleeping so hard she was snoring.  I would have said cats don’t snore but I would have been wrong.

I Have No Words

Let’s see if I can even wrap my brain around these things that are floating around the politisphere.

The president has commissioned 5 new child detention centers.  Private of course.  So now there is a money trail for what’s going on.

The US is separating young children from their parents at the border.  Now let’s be clear that these are illegal immigrants, and the illegality is part of the asylum process.  The adults are sent to jail; children can’t go to jail so they go someplace else.  But we are still pulling families apart.  It’s a shame.  Have we done it in the past?  You betcha.  Doesn’t mean we should do it now.  The past is not our destiny.  We can choose to do something different.

We wtihdrew from the UN’s Human Rights Council.  Withdrew.  What are we hiding or embarrassed about?

But apparently we will have a 6th branch of the military.  The other 5 are Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard.  Number 6 would be the space force.  My gawd, really?  As the meme says, who needs health care (or an infrastructure, or good public transportation or free education) when we can have a space force?  *sigh*

You know, it’s not like I follow politics all that closely.  It’s just things like this that keep coming up again and again.  Fred reads them off the internet.  My Facebook feed is full of pro-Trump propaganda and liberal rebuttals.  The news covers it.  I can’t get away from it..

So here I am, worked up and no idea what to do.  I’m pretty sure I’ll figure it out and then, look out.

The Lucky Iron Fish

This is very cool.

Low iron is a very real health problem. And it’s systemic, by which I mean it affects the entire system of the body. It’s not like a broken bone where one part doesn’t function well, it actually causes problems throughout a body.

Here in the US, doctors used to prescribe “nail tea” to people with anemia. You took a couple of iron nails, boiled them in water for several minutes, and drank it down. The water, not the nails.

Cast iron cookware is another solution, since microscopic bits of iron get mixed into anything cooked in the pan.

This is a lovely, elegant, culturally sensitive to a very real health problem.

Check out the video.

Oh, and after I posted this link in social media, I found out that a friend of mine is the admin for their main American office. I knew what she was doing, I just didn’t know for whom.

22 Non-GMO Companies

GMO stands for “genetically modified organism”. In this context, a GMO is food made from genetically modified ingredients. Since the most common GMOs include feed grains, in some ways grain-fed beef can be considered a GMO.

Many countries require GMO foods to be labelled however the US is not one of them. Therefore it is important to know which companies make common use of modified ingredients and which do not. This list shows the logos for 22 companies that do not use GMOs in their products.

I have used Annie’s and Lundberg for years.  I keep Clif Bars in my desk at work.  I particularly enjoy Lundberg’s rice blends which have texture in the mouth and color on the plate.
