In 1977 my parents got divorced. I had weekend visitation with my dad. He lived in a tiny apartment with no place for us to hang out so he used to take me to the movies. One of the first movies we saw was Star Wars. Now that was back in the day, so it was just called Star Wars, not Episode IV or A New Hope.
We saw it in a movie theater that was converted from a live theater. We sat front and center in the balcony which was like being suspended in the center of the screen. It really sucked me into the fighter sequences! I was hooked. I never saw such a movie before and really no other movie I’ve seen has ever absorbed me the same way.
Later that year we saw Close Encounters of the Third Kind. If you get the idea my dad like sci-fi movies, you’d be about right. And I learned it from him! I know we saw other movies, but those are the 2 I remember.
Why am I thinking of this tonight? Well it’s Father’s Day, a holiday I don’t keep track of since my dad passed away. But Star Wars is on TV, and it reminds me of Dad, so guess what I’m watching.
I miss you, Daddy, but you are always with me.
